Why I Built This

Hi, I'm Stephan. I'm a Microsoft Azure Architect with over 8 years of experience, and I've helped dozens of enterprises migrate to the cloud. I've architected solutions for companies like BMW, E.ON, and TRUMPF.

"We don't search for emails in the terminal, so why are we still managing secrets like it's 1999?"

Key Vault in Practice

Picture this: You're managing a Key Vault with thousands of secrets. Yes, thousands. Because that's what Key Vaults are designed for – not just two or three passwords, but enterprise-scale secret management. You need to find one specific API key urgently.

Your options?

  • The Azure Portal: Click "Load more items"... wait... click again... wait... scroll... click again... (repeat 50 times)
  • Azure CLI: Remember the exact syntax, type commands, parse JSON output, copy-paste values carefully
  • Ask around: Hope a colleague remembers where that secret lives

We're Mac users sitting in front of beautiful, powerful machines with stunning operating systems. We have elegant apps for everything – email, notes, calendars, code editing. Why shouldn't we have the same experience for managing our cloud secrets?

So I Built KeyVault Studio

After years of wrestling with the portal and the CLI, I stopped waiting for someone else to fix this. I'm a developer. I'm an Azure architect. I know exactly what's broken and how to fix it. So I started building the tool I always wanted to have.

No grand vision statement, no startup pitch. Just a clear list of things that needed to work better:

  • Make finding secrets instant – search across thousands in milliseconds
  • Enable seamless multi-account management for consultants and agencies
  • Provide visual version comparison like modern development tools
  • Build a native experience that feels at home across Apple's platforms
  • Build confidence through better visibility and safer operations
"The backend of Azure Key Vault is solid. The security model works. The API is reliable. But the experience of actually using it every day? That's where it falls apart."

Developing What Should Already Exist

Microsoft builds excellent developer tools. Visual Studio Code alone shows they understand what developers need. But for day-to-day Key Vault management on Apple devices, there was a clear gap: no native app, no dedicated client, just the portal, the CLI, or third-party scripts.

The opportunity was never to compete with Microsoft. It was to complement their ecosystem with a focused tool for one job: making day-to-day Key Vault work faster, clearer, and more intuitive across Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

KeyVault Studio isn't just a wrapper around Azure APIs. It's a complete reimagining of how Key Vault management should work:

Instant Search

Search across thousands of secrets in milliseconds. No more clicking "Load more" until your finger hurts.

Multi-Account Magic

Switch between client accounts instantly. Perfect for consultants and agencies managing multiple Azure tenants.

Version Control

Compare secret versions side-by-side. See what changed, when, and why. It's like Git diff for your secrets.

Native Apple Experience

A shared product for Mac, iPhone, and iPad, with biometric protection, device-appropriate layouts, and keyboard support where it genuinely helps.

What's Next

KeyVault Studio now ships as one product across Mac, iPhone, and iPad. The next step is refining how the same capabilities feel even better on each device.

Now that the shared foundation is in place, the next question is what should become faster, safer, or clearer on each device.

Join the Beta

KeyVault Studio is currently in beta through TestFlight on Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Your feedback helps shape every release. What still feels missing? What would make daily work smoother?

This isn't just another cloud tool. It's built by an Azure architect who uses Key Vault every day – for architects, engineers, and DevOps teams who share the same vision for what cloud tooling should be.

Let's make Key Vault management not just bearable, but actually delightful.
